Dmitri was alone. He had spent most of his life wandering, sometimes with companions, but usually without. He didn't feel the soul-sapping sadness of solitude, because he'd been by himself so often before. Besides, it wasn't safe in the wild lands. Even seasoned hunters like himself were in danger out here. Wild animals are no joke, if they think you're an easy meal, you're a target. If they think you're a predator, they'll do whatever is necessary to stop you. In these circumstances, making the wrong decision could be fatal.
But Dmitri would not be alone for long. his sled was laden with meat and furs. Hunters were always welcome in town, and Dmitri was no exception. Sometimes he would enjoy a few relaxing days in town, sometimes dally with the townswomen. He'd occasionally tell the stories of his encounters in the taverns and inns, and had even been known to do the odd jobs that the townsfolk needed doing.
The life was financially rewarding, and spiritually satisfying. He often felt that he'd chosen the best possible profession. He worked for himself and, although he had a good work ethic, he could take whatever time off he wished to. He didn't allow himself to hunt for any particular settlement, because a town could become accustomed to having a hunter around. To maintain his freedom, he'd move to new hunting grounds every few moons. That said, he'd been living in this valley for the last five years. He had become know in the six townships, where news of his arrival would sometimes precede him by days, as people noticed his traps in the nearby woods. He was beginning to feel that it was time for him to move on.
